Deputies present $1,500 check for new jerseys to South Texas Regional Adaptive & Para Sports.

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Bexar County deputies played wheelchair basketball with young athletes with physical disabilities at Morgan’s Wonderland Sports this morning, the first event led by ACT, the recently launched nonprofit community outreach and support arm of the Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Bexar County (DSABC). The deputies also presented a $1,500 check to the staff of South Texas Regional Adaptative & Para Sports (STRAPS) based at Morgan’s Wonderland, a unique theme park providing recreational and competitive sports opportunities to all those with physical disabilities. The money will be used to acquire jerseys for participating athletes with disabilities and represents the latest development in the DSABC’s ongoing community service efforts in the Bexar County area.

STRAPS athletes easily defeated their DSABC challengers.

“We had a fantastic day welcoming the deputy sheriffs to our gym and introducing them to the fun of all the adaptative and para sports activities we offer,” says Audrey Sutterfield, Program Director of STRAPS. “The kids were overjoyed to share the court with the deputies and to know that, soon, they will be wearing jerseys to properly represent their teams.”

“We wanted to help STRAPS fulfill its mission of building confidence in these children,” says Jeremy Payne, President of the DSABC. “That’s why we showed up in person ready to play ball, and ready to get outplayed by some of these amazing athletes.”

When they are not busy protecting Bexar County, members of the DSABC volunteer their free time to give back to the community through various service initiatives that help residents and their families thrive. These initiatives were recently reorganized and rebranded into ACT, the DSABC’s new charitable arm currently focusing on youth sports action, college scholarships and mentorships.
